New Urban music is a new, current movement in music away from the depressing and manic sounds of the 2000s and towards a more positive, spiritual and innocent sound that will become prevalent as we enter the 2010s.
Up until recently, popular music, if having any meaning at all, was about anger, sex, depression, and gimmicks. Melody was put on the back burner and heavy beats and catch phrases on the forefront.
Today, in 2009, this is finally beginning to change. Artists such as Lights and Owl City are creative music that is more positive, more melodic, more romantic, and with a greater diversity of subject matter.
New Urban music is in spirit related to the New Urban design of cities, and indeed many new urban artists sing about the beauty of cities, nature and other beautiful things that exist in the modern world.
Artists that I would consider to be New Urban include:
Mat Kearney Lights MGMT Kid Cudi Mimzy Owl City The Postal Service Hellogoodbye The New Cities Ladyhawke

I don't know, do you consider Timbaland's "The Way I Are", "Dangerous", "Sexy Back", Pitbull's "Calle Ocho", Kanye West's "Flashing Lights", Sean Garrett's "Turbo 909" to Busta Rhymes's "World Go Round" and many many more examples of such tracks to be what you call "New Urban"? I mean all this African American recent 4-to-the-floor music craze.

i don't mean Urban in the sense of inner-city/multi-cultural. The term "new urban" comes from the connection with the New Urbanism movement in city planning.
